THE SOUTH AFRICAN DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY GROUP

“Our mission is to eliminate discrimination and stigma about substance abuse and mental health and to support, educate and assist the public, patients and their families regarding available resources and treatment options which will help lead to their recovery”

Started in 1994, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) operates the only Toll-Free Suicide Crisis Line in South Africa, an anonymous Toll-Free Police Line for officers in crisis, and now the first Toll-Free Substance Abuse line in addition to their15-line call centre. The lines are manned 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm by a team of dedicated, highly-trained counsellors who refer callers to rehabilitation centres, clinics, other NGOs, support groups, specialised psychologists, and psychiatrists and send vital information brochures and packs to aid loved ones and the addict themselves get the help and support they need and foster successful treatment and recovery.

South Africa has the 8th highest suicide rate according to the UN and 9.5% of all teen deaths in South Africa are due to suicide. SADAG will work extensively with communities and youth across South Africa to create awareness, and educate communities about substance abuse and it heavy impact of individuals, families and communities.

Many people are marginalised or at risk due to their life-circumstances and made more vulnerable through drug use. This line offers support, guidance and help for people addicted to drugs and alcohol as well as their families, no matter where in South Africa they are.

"Illicit drugs destroy innumerable individual lives and undermine our societies. Confronting the illicit trade in drugs and its effects remains a major challenge for the international community."
(Kofi Annan)
